01 · Awwwards winners 2025–2026: what wins today, what is already tired, and seeds for ETS27
Lens: Awwwards Site of the Day, Site of the Month and the 2025 Annual Awards, with the live sites rendered headless at 1440×900 and 390×844 on 2026-10-14. Renders live in concepts/research/refs/<slug>/ (desktop-top, desktop-s1/s2, mobile-top, meta.json with the fonts actually in use). Scores quoted are the jury averages shown on each Awwwards page.
1. What I studied
Thirteen sites rendered and looked at, plus a second ring read from Awwwards pages and case studies only.

Awwwards pages for the events category: https://www.awwwards.com/websites/events/ ; sites of the month: https://www.awwwards.com/websites/sites_of_the_month/ ; annual winners: https://www.awwwards.com/annual-awards/winners.
One number pattern before the detail: on every winner above, creativity is the highest sub-score and usability the lowest (usability sits between 7.2 and 7.9 even on the Site of the Year). The jury rewards the idea and forgives friction. ETS27 cannot afford the friction (facts in under a minute), so the trick is to steal the idea-level moves and keep the facts bar nailed down.
2. What actually works, and why
2.1 The first second is a handshake, not a hero
The 2026 winners do not open with a headline and a button. They open by asking the visitor to do one small thing, and the site begins only after that.
- Why Zero: a sea-glass green WebGL surface, a relief-coloured 3D hand rising out of it, a thin circular ring and the words
DRAW A ZEROin PP Supply Mono. Page height is literally 900 px until you draw. The gesture is the brand (zero) and the onboarding at once. - GQ × AP: a black room drawn in chalk-thin white wireframe perspective, the lockup
GQ × APsmall and centred, one line of GT America caps (FOLLOW A STORY TOLD BY…), a boxedCLICK ANYWHERE TO ENABLE SOUNDand a headphone glyph. Sound is a first-class layer (one continuous timeline drives camera, dialogue, interface and audio; 3.5 months, ten people, 60 fps on an iPhone 11), so consent is designed as the opening. - Siena: pure black, the flared SIENA logotype,
FILM FOUNDATIONletterspaced to the full width of the mark, and anENTERbutton shaped as a cinema ticket with a perforated stub holding the arrow. The gate is a prop from the world of the brand. - Santioni: the age gate is a typographic poster.
ARE YOU OFat the top of the phone,LEGAL AGE?at the bottom, both in Charles Rosie flared caps at about 80 px, YES / NO as thin-ruled boxes with an art-nouveau ornament between them. A legal chore turned into the best screen of the site. - Cartier: one sand-beige screen (#C8B7A6), one sentence in small letterspaced caps, a
99counter and a hairline. Luxury tolerates a loader; everyone else should hide it inside a gate that means something.
Why it works: the visitor's first act is physical and tiny, the site answers it, and from that moment the page is a thing they are inside rather than a thing they are reading.
2.2 A physical object you can touch, drawn at desk scale
- Lando Norris: a cut-out portrait centred on warm off-white (#F2F1EC with a near-invisible topographic contour pattern), and a 3D helmet visor the visitor drags and spins over his eyes. On the phone a hand glyph says
TAP TO LOCK. The chrome is reduced to the wordmark, an LN monogram, an acidSTOREpill and an outlined square menu; a floatingNEXT RACE · AUSTIN GPticket sits bottom-left. - Oryzo: a photoreal cutting mat, pencil, knife and paper clip under a cork coaster, shot from above;
ORYZOin Halyard Display wide heavy caps at about 170 px in cream; a vertical cream tabORYZO-1 MODELparked on the right viewport edge; a frosted panel bottom-left; a presenter video thumbnail bottom-right;SCROLL TO CONTINUEwith a dashed circle. The whole page is a desk, and the second screen is a full dark-brown "breath" with the logotype ghosted at about 20 % opacity before the next scene.
Why it works: material and scale. A real mat with real millimetre marks beats a gradient blob because the eye knows what it is and the hand wants it.
2.3 Typography: two or three roles, extreme size jumps, and one mark made by hand
Fonts read from the rendered pages' computed styles (meta.json), not from guesswork:
| Site | Display | Functional / text | Mono / metadata | |---|---|---|---| | Lando Norris | Brier (high-contrast flared serif), bold only | Mona Sans Variable, extra-light to black | — | | Oryzo | Halyard Display (wide grotesk) | Literata (serif) | DM Mono | | Shopify Renaissance | PP Neue Montreal, plus HW Cigars (serif with swash caps) | Neue Montreal | Roman numerals as index | | Why Zero | Google Sans Flex | — | PP Supply Mono / Supply Sans | | Siena | custom flared logotype, P22 Parrish Roman | NB International, Neue Brucke | — | | Tracing Art | Bardford (Caslon-like serif) | Graphik | — | | GQ × AP | Adobe Garamond Pro | GT America | — | | No Art | hand-scrawled logotype | Neue Haas Grotesk Text | Chivo Mono (everything else) | | Santioni | Charles Rosie (flared caps), PP Nikkei Maru Ultrabold | GT Era Text Light | — | | Frontier Dialogues | AS Therma (squared, squeezed slab), OT Neue Montreal Squeezed | Stabil Grotesk | ABC Diatype Mono Condensed | | Terminal | Suisse Intl | Suisse Intl | Geist Mono (all buttons and labels) | | MindMarket | Inter | Inter | — |
What the table says:
- The winning system is a display face with a personality (flared serif, squeezed slab, wide grotesk, swash serif) plus a quiet text face plus a mono for every label, date, index and button. Eight of thirteen use a mono for metadata. The mono is doing the work Inter used to do.
- Sizes are not 3× apart, they are 15–30× apart. Shopify sets
Marketingat about 190 px over a painted valley; Frontier Dialogues fills 1440 px withFRONTIER / DIALOGUESat roughly 400 px on two lines; Oryzo is about 170 px; MindMarket'sReal human insightsabout 150 px; labels sit at 10–12 px mono caps with 0.08–0.12 em tracking. - One hand-made mark over the typeset page is the 2025–26 signature: Lando's acid-yellow scribbled
ONsitting on top of the BrierON; No Art's blue markerNoARTscrawl over a crowd photo, framed by crop marks. - Knockout type as image mask: Frontier's title letters are windows onto a rainbow gradient blob image, on an electric-blue page. The image is only visible through the word.
- Forced justification with wide word gaps as a texture: No Art's
DISCOVER THE WORLD OF NO ART AROUND THE GLOBEin heavy grotesk caps; Tracing Art's closing sentence with the wordgeopoliticalpushed apart from its neighbours. - Typographic puns carry concept: Shopify's
Ren*ai*ssancesets the two letters in italic serif inside a grotesk word. One detail, whole idea. - MindMarket is the control case: it won Site of the Month on Inter. The idea (a scroll-drawn thread connecting 85 hand-placed elements, Rive characters, a single flat green page) carried it. Type is not what wins; type is what loses when there is no idea. For ETS27 Inter is banned regardless.
2.4 Colour: one world, a paper or a dark, one signal
| Site | Surface | Ink | Signal | |---|---|---|---| | Lando Norris | off-white #F2F1EC, charcoal for galleries | #111112 | #D2FF00 acid | | Oryzo | #100904 near-black, green cutting mat | cream | #FF8539 orange | | Shopify | #F7F7EE paper, painted skies | #292919 olive-black | magenta props (cup, bag, wheels) | | Why Zero | sea-glass green WebGL | white | #01C654 | | MindMarket | #8ED462 flat green, full bleed | #262626 | #F5E211 yellow, blue, coral in the illustration | | Terminal | dusk photo gradient, then #0E1F1A green-black | white | acid green | | Siena | #000000 | #FAF7EF | none | | Tracing Art | white, then #DAE2E8 chapter blue-grey | black | the artworks | | GQ × AP | black | white | none, chalk lines | | No Art | white | black | one red for map pins | | Santioni | #1C1C1C | white | #592223 burgundy, #C82924 red | | Frontier Dialogues | electric blue (about #1400FF) | cream #F8F3E8 | orange chapter bands, thermal-gradient figures | | Cartier | sand #C8B7A6 | white | none |
The rule across all of them: a committed surface colour (paper, cream, black, or one saturated flat), one ink, one signal. Gradients appear only as photographs or as objects (Frontier's blobs), never as the page. Acid green / chartreuse is the accent of 2025 (Lando, Terminal, MindMarket, Why Zero) and is therefore the first thing ETS27 should not use.
2.5 Layout grammar: the centre is for the big thing, the chrome lives at the edges
- Edge-parked information: Lando's next-race ticket bottom-left; Oryzo's vertical model tab on the right edge; No Art's registration crop marks in all four viewport corners, a
NEXT UPcard bottom-right and a justified mono paragraph bottom-left; Tracing Art's chapter progress as a vertical pill on the right edge. - The left rail as table of contents: Shopify lists twelve chapters with Roman numerals and dotted leaders in a fixed left column; Frontier Dialogues runs
HOME · CH.00 … CH.07 · PEEPS · MAILdown a blue rail separated from the page by a perforated zigzag edge. Both hold on the phone unchanged. - The fork as a split screen: Lando's second screen is
ON TRACK / OFF TRACK: the helmet cropped by the left viewport edge, his profile cropped by the right, the two words in the gutter (Brier serif small over Mona Sans black large), one line of description and a square button under each. This is the closest existing answer to ETS27's two doors. - Poster rows instead of card grids: Frontier's guest list is one row per person: a cream square with a thermal-gradient silhouette, the name in cream squeezed caps at about 120 px, role and company small. No Art's events are a horizontal carousel of posters, each by a different illustrator, indexed
[01] NO ART LISBON · OCTOBER 10, 2026, with a tick-mark scrubber andPREV / NEXT. - The instrument panel: Terminal's second screen is a left column of Suisse Intl at about 36 px with the upcoming paragraph already visible at 20 % opacity (it darkens as it becomes current), a tiny
02section number in the margin, and a black rounded panel on the right holding a live blueprint of a truck yard with numbered bays. A diagram, not a photo. - Diagonal reading: Tracing Art puts a painting in the middle and its successive owners' names at opposite corners (top-left
Baron Hastings, bottom-rightCharles Sedelmeyer), so provenance reads as a path across the screen. - Scatter as an opening: Tracing Art's first screen is a loose constellation of forty artwork thumbnails at 60–130 px, some faded, under a single serif wordmark.
2.6 Motion pacing: timing, not movement
- MindMarket's case study says it in one line: "the energy of the site is not driven by constant movement, but by timing." Rive animations fire only on viewport entry; the thread is three layered SVG paths driven by normalised scroll progress; 85 elements were hand-placed per breakpoint.
- The breath screen: Oryzo cuts to a full dark screen with a ghosted logotype between scenes. Nothing moves. It resets the eye before the next 3D sequence.
- Scroll-locked cinema: GQ × AP and Cartier are one continuous timeline where scroll position is the camera, the dialogue, the interface and the sound at once (Theatre.js for authoring, Three.js, custom PBR, planar reflections, 60 fps on an iPhone 11/12). Cartier is six alcoves, each a self-contained world with hidden gestures that reward curiosity.
- Progressive disclosure of text: Terminal fades the next paragraph in from 20 % as it becomes current; Tracing Art and the others use GSAP ScrollTrigger plus Lenis with inertia, so a transition always has a cause.
- Sound as a layer: GQ × AP, Cartier (Mooders), Santioni (plan8), Why Zero. Every one of them gates sound behind a click, and the gate is designed.
- The cost: Oryzo is 56,700 px tall, Shopify 54,100, Tracing Art 81,450; Cartier did not finish loading in a 60 s headless window. The jury tolerates it (usability is always the lowest score). A utility executive on a hotel connection will not.
2.7 Navigation reinvented, and the assistant's place in it
- Terminal puts a mono input
✦ Ask Terminalinside the nav bar, between the menu and the three buttons, on every page. On the phone a bubble appears bottom-right:Asked on this page: How much does Terminal cost?with a badge1on the logo avatar. Other visitors' questions become the prompt. This is the single most transferable mechanic for ETS27's mind. - L.I.S.A. (Locomotive): the agency site is the assistant, with a 3D character and a conversational interface; Awwwards lists "conversational interface" and "microcopy and UX writing" as the elements that won it.
- Siena: the left menu is local (it changes per page), the right panel is global; buttons are cinema tickets; the home is a film-strip slider with directional blur that scales with drag speed.
- Ponpon Mania: chapters are albums and panels are songs, so the nav is a music player.
- Bruno Simon: no UI at all; drive a car; leaderboards, whispers, unlockable skins.
- Colonia Zacamil: a map is the nav, with a day/night toggle and a present/past comparison.
- Shopify: Roman numerals with leader dots; the header reduces to one line and the chapter list becomes a fixed rail.
2.8 How text and image interleave
- Shopify: generative Renaissance paintings with anachronistic props (a pink coffee cup, a skateboard with magenta wheels, a pink shopping bag), the title in a thin-stroked square at the centre of the collage, chapter names in white grotesk at 190 px over a painted valley, and a swash-capital serif subhead under it. The anachronism is the idea; the type is the editor's voice over it.
- Frontier: the image lives only inside the letters. Guests are thermal-camera gradients on cream squares, so a private dinner stays private and the people become one material.
- Lando: a product (the visor) is laid over a portrait as a layer the visitor controls.
- No Art: a marker scrawl over a crowd; posters by different illustrators per event; product shots of merch standing in a forest of flight cases.
- Tracing Art: captions as a row under each painting (
The "Piebald" Horse, Paulus Potter · J. Paul Getty Museum, CC0), the only element in a small sans. - OFFFForum: the festival's headline is the facts line, set once and large:
A WEEK OF DESIGN, ART & DIGITAL CULTURE · OFFF SEPT 2–3 · FORUM · SEPT 4, 2026 · SAT, MONTRÉALin Forvm, an inscriptional Roman serif, at about 48 px caps on black, with Baikal for the rest. The lineup above it is a contact sheet of 90 px thumbnails of the speakers' work, not their faces, scattered six across on black (four across on the phone). The one thing that damages it is a cookie banner covering the bottom-right quarter of every render: do not put one on the ETS27 mockups.
3. What has become cliché
Won in 2023, now the default an Awwwards reader scrolls past:
- The agency template: a large tight-tracked grotesk headline, a marquee ticker, a cursor-follower blob,
(scroll)in brackets, a hover-reveal image on a project list, Lenis smooth scroll and a SplitText stagger on every heading. Lenis and SplitText are still in nearly every winner's stack, but as plumbing, not as the idea. - Space Grotesk, Syne, Inter with negative tracking, Neue Montreal as the safe pick (it is on three of the thirteen sites above; it is fine, it is also nearly a default).
- Pure black with one neon and a film-grain overlay. Noise with no reason.
- The floating glass nav pill (MindMarket and Terminal both have one; it works, it is not a point of difference).
- Percentage loaders (Cartier's
99, Santioni's bar). Luxury gets away with it. - Acid green / chartreuse as the accent: four of thirteen winners. It has crossed from signal to uniform.
- The ✦ sparkle as the AI glyph (Terminal uses it); glowing orbs, chat bubbles with gradients, "powered by AI" copy.
- Bento feature grids, three-card rows, pinned horizontal galleries, 3D blob heroes, dark mode with purple-to-blue glows.
- Full-screen video hero with a centred headline and a pill button.
Fresh in 2026, from the evidence above: gesture and consent gates that mean something; desk-scale physical props and print devices (cutting mats, tickets, perforations, crop marks, registration corners, leader dots, Roman numerals, chapter codes, [01] indices, local-time readouts); a display face with flare or squeeze paired with a mono; a single flat page colour; a hand-made mark over typeset text; knockout type as the only window onto an image; people abstracted into one material instead of a grid of headshots; the assistant inside the navigation surfacing other people's questions; scroll-locked timelines with sound; copy with a voice (Oryzo: "the world's most unnecessarily sophisticated cork coaster"; Santioni: "indulge now, atone later"; Raw Materials: "an unusual design company"); and silence used as a section.
4. Provocations for ETS27
Each is a seed, not a concept; a concept takes one of these and commits.
- The site begins when the visitor draws. Not a zero: anything. A single stroke on an empty page, and that stroke becomes the mind's first thought: a line that keeps living on every page afterwards, threading the agenda, underlining the speaker you hovered, becoming the cursor of the composer. Why Zero's gesture gate fused with MindMarket's thread, owned by the visitor instead of the brand.
FREE YOUR MINDat 400 pt on two lines filling 1440 px, set in a squeezed slab or a flared serif, and the letters are the only window onto a live canvas: not a gradient blob, the ERCOT load curve for May 3–6 of the previous year, or the Austin night-sky heat map, rendered as slow colour. The energy industry's own data is the picture, and it is visible only through the theme.
- The fork as Lando's
ON TRACK / OFF TRACK: two images cropped hard by the viewport edges (a printed map on the left, an open field or an empty stage on the right),OPEN THE MAPandASK THE MINDin the gutter in a serif-over-grotesk stack, and a hand-scrawled accent word that appears over whichever door the cursor approaches. The seam between the two images is the composer; start typing and the right door takes the whole screen.
- The mind lives in the chrome, not in a bubble. A mono input
ask the mindsits in the nav bar on every page next to tickets (Terminal's move), and a small card at the bottom edge rotates real, moderated questions other visitors asked on this page:asked here: who is speaking on grid resilience on Tuesday?. Tap the question and the answer composes on the page. The four suggestion chips in the current prototype become this feed.
- Speakers without headshots. The renderer turns every speaker photo into one material (a thermal gradient silhouette, a relief map, a single-colour halftone), so 147 inconsistent avatars and 47 generic ones become one typeface of people; the real photo appears only on the speaker card. Frontier Dialogues' thermal guests prove the jury reads this as a concept, and it solves the content inventory's avatar problem by design rather than by chasing photos.
- One flat colour for the entire site. No white, no gradient, no dark mode. A single committed surface (a 7 pm Austin sky, a transformer-oil amber, a cobalt that is not Frontier's ultramarine), cream ink, and one signal colour that is not chartreuse, used for exactly two things: what is live now, and the mind's own words. The black footer in the current direction becomes a breath screen (Oryzo): a full-bleed, single-colour pause with one ghosted word at 15 % between each major section.
- The agenda as one continuous object. Four days laid out as a single line (a transmission line, a wire, a train of 68 stations) that the scroll moves a camera along; sessions are stations with mono timestamps; days are the only typographic breaks, set at 300 pt. The mind can jump the camera to any station when asked. Sound optional and consent-gated, as GQ × AP and Cartier do it, but the no-sound version must be complete.
- Print, not glass. Registration crop marks in the four viewport corners,
[01]indices on everything that is a list, leader-dot tables of contents,LOCAL TIME 19:04:12 CDT · AUSTINreadouts, and a perforated ticket edge separating the navigation rail from the page (Frontier's zigzag, Siena's ticket stub). The ticket is the one object the whole site is made of: the fork is a ticket torn in two, the speaker card is a ticket, the dates line is the ticket's fine print, and buying a ticket is the only glossy thing on the site.
- A left rail of chapter codes instead of a top nav:
DAY.01 … DAY.04 · MINDS · MAP · TIX · ASKin a squeezed display face, fixed, surviving on the phone exactly as Frontier's does. Every list underneath is poster rows (one person or one session per row, name at 120 px, role small) rather than cards. Nothing in the site is a card.
- Copy with a voice, dry. Oryzo and Santioni won partly on jokes; Raw Materials calls itself "an unusual design company". ETS27 is "the energy industry's ideas summit" and can say "Four days. One city. No beige." The mind's "I don't have that yet" line is already in the brief; let the whole site talk like that, in sentence case, with one aside per screen at most.
- Keep the facts where the jury's usability score says winners fail. One mono line under the title that never leaves:
ETS27 · FREE YOUR MIND · AUSTIN, TX · MAY 3–6, 2027 · TICKETS(Frontier'sEDITION 1 · FOREIGN CINEMA · FEBRUARY 2026line is exactly this). Every provocation above sits on top of that line, never instead of it.
