07 · Anti-generic forensics: why the prototype reads as "made by Claude", and a checklist judges can score against

Lens: forensics of the "generic / AI-generated" web look, an honest autopsy of our own v3 prototype, and the opposite. Written 2026-10-14 for the ETS27 concept round. Everything below was looked at as pixels (renders in concepts/research/refs/), not inferred from text.

1. What was studied

Our own prototype (rendered fresh, 1440×900 and 390×844)

Fonts actually in use (from meta.json): Unbounded (display and text) and Geist Mono (every label, chip, nav link, prompt). Palette from brief/design-direction.md §6.3: white, three warm fog greys, hairline #E2E2DF, black, one raspberry accent #C1115A.

Calibration set: the named "looks" (what the discourse is pointing at)

| Site | Why | Render | |---|---|---| | https://linear.app | "the Linear look": dark surface, 72 px light-weight headline, app screenshot as hero, glow | refs/linear/ | | https://vercel.com | "the Vercel look": Geist, black object with a soft halo on white, logo wall | refs/vercel/ | | https://ui.shadcn.com | "the shadcn look": badge pill → centred 56 px headline → subhead → two pill buttons → bento of cards. The generator of the AI default | refs/shadcn/ | | https://lovable.dev | "the Lovable look": centred headline + composer box over a blue-to-pink gradient blob on white | refs/lovable/ | | https://energythoughtsummit.com | ETS26 live: the predecessor world (black glitch static, pixel terminal face, "...coming soon", Uncode template nav) | refs/ets26-live/ |

Contrast set: award winners and event sites that are unmistakably themselves

Thirteen render folders in all: ten external sites plus the three prototype pages.

Published critique (read, not just searched)

Not retrievable, so not cited: Yuwen Lu's X article "Signs of vibe coded UI" (402 from WebFetch, empty capture from the fallback) and a Medium piece on the terminal aesthetic (403).

2. Autopsy of the v3 prototype: what reads generic, exactly, and why

The short version: the prototype avoided every loud tell (no purple gradient, no glass, no bento, no stock turbines) and walked straight into the quiet ones. The result sits squarely in two of the nine community-catalogued Claude families at once, "Editorial Minimalism" and "Terminal-Core", which is precisely the combination a reader who has seen fifty Claude outputs recognises in under a second. "Tasteful default" is still default.

2.1 The opening (index.html)

2.2 The standard route (standard.html)

2.3 The mind route (mind.html)

2.4 Scored against the checklist

Scored against §4 below the prototype scores 2 on 22 of 30 tells, 1 on two (scale shock after the hero; copy and the countdown) and 0 on six (purple gradient, default-library accent colour, bento, glass and shadows, stock imagery, default icon set). It misses the loud ones and hits the quiet ones, which is the finding: avoiding "purple gradient" is table stakes, and the mono-eyebrow, single-accent, clay-object, centred-stack, equal-cards, chat-empty-state cluster is just as legible a signature.

3. What actually works in the contrast set, and why (specifics)

4. The forensic checklist: 30 tells, one reason each, scorable

Score each concept 0 (absent), 1 (present but with a reason), 2 (present as default). A concept with no loud tells but more than ten quiet ones is still generic. The last column is the v3 prototype.

| # | Tell | Why it reads generic | v3 | |---|---|---|---| | 1 | Inter, Roboto, Arial, Open Sans, Lato, system stacks, or their 2024–26 replacements (Space Grotesk, Syne, Unbounded, Bricolage Grotesque, Instrument Serif) | The second-order "I tried" picks are now first-order tells (Ad Pharm; Anthropic's own cookbook) | 2 | | 2 | Geist Sans or Geist Mono | It is Vercel's identity; using it borrows Vercel | 2 | | 3 | Monospace as the "metadata voice" for every eyebrow, label, timestamp, nav link | The dev-tool landing page habit; says "made in a code editor" | 2 | | 4 | // comment prefixes, [ bracket ] verbs, > prompts, :: separators in UI copy | Terminal cosplay; the Terminal-Core family signature | 2 | | 5 | Tracked-out light uppercase line (weight 200–300, letter-spacing ≥ 0.2 em) under a heavy wordmark | The 2019–2023 Awwwards-portfolio tic; weight contrast as costume | 2 | | 6 | One wide display face at 900 for the wordmark, nothing else at that scale anywhere | Editorial-minimal template: a loud logo on a quiet page | 2 | | 7 | A textbook modular type scale with no scale shock after the first screen | Nothing below the fold is ever allowed to be bigger than 64 px | 1 | | 8 | Purple, indigo or blue-to-pink gradients; glowing "AI orbs"; gradient text on metrics | Tailwind indigo-500 plus Linear glow; the loudest 2026 tell | 0 | | 9 | Black on off-white with one accent used on one or two elements per screen | The default of both the Awwwards-portfolio class and Claude's Editorial Minimalism; the accent is garnish, not a world | 2 | | 10 | Warm-white "bone" background (#FAFAF9, #F7F5F2) chosen as "premium" with no texture decision behind it | "Not-quite-white" is a non-choice everyone makes | 2 | | 11 | A default-library accent: Tailwind blue #3B82F6, Claude teal #16D5E6, shadcn greys | Unchosen colour | 0 | | 12 | All photography converted to black and white | The "make it premium" filter; it erases warmth and colour information in one move | 2 | | 13 | Nav bar: logo left, four to six links, outlined or pill Register/Sign up right | The frame every template ships with; it says nothing about the thing | 2 | | 14 | Centred (or left-aligned) hero stack: eyebrow → headline → subhead → two CTAs | The median of the training corpus; shadcn's homepage is the canonical instance | 2 | | 15 | N-up equal cards with identical height, padding, radius and border | "Three cards in a row" was Tailwind's first tutorial | 2 | | 16 | A stat row (big numerals, tiny captions) | The social-proof slot, filled whether or not the numbers mean anything | 2 | | 17 | Bento grid | Apple keynote slide → Linear → every AI landing page | 0 | | 18 | Partner or sponsor logos as pills, chips or a tiered logo wall | A tag cloud is a list, not a design | 2 | | 19 | Uniform people grid of square headshots with monogram fallbacks | The "meet the team" component; people reduced to tiles | 2 | | 20 | Two identical-weight "choice cards" for a decision | A decision presented as a settings screen; neither option is the adventure | 2 | | 21 | Every section on the same beat: eyebrow → H2 → content → hairline | One tempo makes the page a list | 2 | | 22 | A floating chat pill bottom-right with an avatar | Intercom's slot; whatever lives there is a support widget | 2 | | 23 | Chat empty state: greeting headline → suggestion chips → input bar at the bottom | ChatGPT, Perplexity and Lovable's homepage, verbatim | 2 | | 24 | A matte-clay 3D object (blob, head, shape) floating over a soft background | Spline default material; "too smooth, too symmetrical, plastic" | 2 | | 25 | Soft-blur clouds or gradient fog with no light source, horizon or scale | Atmosphere without a rule is a Gaussian blur | 2 | | 26 | Glassmorphism panels, soft drop shadows, decorative noise | Effects library, not material | 0 | | 27 | Stock categories (turbines, panels, handshakes, skylines) or AI illustrations | See the brief; nobody chose them | 0 | | 28 | Lucide, Heroicons or Feather thin-line icons | The default icon set of the default component library | 0 (few icons) | | 29 | Uniform fade-up-on-scroll for every element, same easing and duration, or no scroll choreography at all | Motion as a filter, or motion only in the first screen | 2 | | 30 | Averaged copy ("Next generation", "Build faster"), hedging, countdown timers and "coming soon" | Words with nothing specific in them; the countdown is filler | 1 |

Loud tells (score 2 on any of 8, 11, 17, 26, 27) disqualify on sight. Quiet tells (the rest) add up; more than ten at score 2 means the concept will be read as generated, however tasteful.

Two tells that are specific to this project and worth adding to the judges' sheet:

5. What has become cliché, in one paragraph each

6. Provocations: the opposite, as concrete seeds for ETS27

  1. Kill the head, keep the mind. Make the mind a field, not a figure: the whole viewport is a slowly reorganising lattice of every speaker name and session title at 11 px (hundreds of words, in colour, in the display face), and the only "intelligence" visible is that words drift toward the cursor and toward whatever the visitor starts typing. The content is the atmosphere; nothing floats on a backdrop.
  2. One word, no doors. The opening is a single 400-pt "MIND" (or "FREE") in a condensed black grotesk filling the screen edge to edge, cropped by the viewport. Scroll and it becomes the map; type and the letters dissolve into the answer. The fork is an act, not two cards.
  3. Corners, not stacks. Borrow DEMO's and Lando's rule: the four facts (May 3–6 2027 · Austin · Free Your Mind · Tickets) live in the four corners at 14 px, always, on every page; the centre of every screen is for exactly one thing. Nothing is ever centre-stacked.
  4. One colour that is not a palette. Texas-sun orange (around #FF5A1F) on 100 % of the opening with black type, or burnt sky at dusk; the standard route lives in the inverse world. Commit the way OFFF and Config commit; no fog greys, no hairlines, no accent.
  5. Real faces at Lando scale. The lineup is one speaker per screen at 70 % viewport height, in colour, with a drawn construct over the head (the wireframe "mind" the brief wanted), navigable by typing a name; the grid exists only as a text index below. The speaker is the hero, not the tile.
  6. A day with a shape. The agenda is a vertical 24-hour bar per day where session blocks have real heights and the light changes from morning to evening along the bar; the single accent on the site is the "now" cursor. Breakfast and the keynote stop being the same hairline apart.
  7. Notation becomes typography. Delete //, [ ], > and mono. All interface copy in one display face at two sizes only (14 and 96) with one typographic device the brand owns, for example a thin rule that enters from the right edge before every answer, or a drop cap that is the first letter the visitor typed.
  8. Material, not fog. If there must be atmosphere it has a rule and a source: a dither field that resolves where the visitor looks (Config), a contour map of the Texas grid drawn in hairlines (Lando's topography with a reason), light leaking between blocks (igloo). Rendered, never blurred.
  9. The mind in the margin. The assistant is a running gloss column, a book's marginal notes, that writes alongside whatever the visitor is reading, or it is the nav itself (the nav items are questions, not nouns). Never a pill bottom-right.
  10. The opening is a poster. Judge every concept's first frame by one test: could it be printed at A0 and hung in the Austin venue without a button on it? If it needs a card to make sense it is not done.

7. For the judges: how to use this

Score every concept on §4 before discussing taste. Then ask the two questions the contrast set answers: can you say the idea in one sentence (igloo: "an igloo, lit"; DEMO: "one shape"; OFFF: "colour bands are the nav"), and does the first frame work as a poster? A concept that passes both with a low §4 score is the one to build. Appearance first, mechanics second, exactly as the owner asked.
