The issue
An issue, not a site: Energy Thought Summit No. 14 set as a fifty-six-page journal with a flag, a 240 px dateline, a contents column with leader dots, folios, footnotes, numbered plates and a colophon, in which sessions are articles, speakers are contributors, the ticket is a bound-in subscription card, and the mind writes in the margin in a second hand, with proofreader's marks reaching into the text.
Revised 2026-10-15 after the round-one jurors (plates, line 02, a way back, the index, show-through, the phone). The version they scored is kept unchanged in v1/.
The story
The owner's prototype looked generated because it was built from the parts every site is built from. This concept is built from the parts every magazine is built from, which the web has barely touched: Eye's critical apparatus, Monocle's luxury of smallness, Are.na's document with an open line in it. The cover carries no headline and no image. It carries the newspaper flag (nameplate, issue number, the facts line along the top edge), an ear with the cover price (which is the ticket price), and one enormous object: the dateline, "May 3–6, 2027", set at 240 px in a hairline Literata. A proofreader's caret stands on the dateline's baseline right after "2027", and once the fonts have loaded the mind draws a line up from it and writes the city in, in its italic hand: "in Austin, Texas — venue to follow¹". That one written insertion is the cover's physical moment.
Below the fold the issue proceeds in order: a leader for the theme (Free / Your / Mind at display size, the announcement's sentence quoted with a footnote), seventy-seven contributors as an alphabetical index with leader dots to the folio where each appears, plus four plates printed as one-ink halftones, four programme pages with the day numeral as the only large element and the sessions as a timetable with times in mono and a folio per entry, the mind's own inserted page 031 ("01 · Who's speaking Tuesday", filed after the Tuesday pages), a subscription card bound in on cover stock, a place page ("Austin", venue to follow, coordinates, the Eventbrite pin treated as a pin), and a colophon that exposes the state lab-notebook style: snapshot 2026-10-13 · 77 speakers · 50 sessions · 4 days · sample data.
Two paper stocks and show-through are the texture decision, and both are now material rather than flat fills. The text pages are newsprint, with visible formation and grain; the cover and the subscription card are cover stock, lighter and finer. On two newsprint pages the next display numeral shows through, mirrored, at about three per cent, behind that page's own text. Portraits are screened at 45° in the text ink, because an issue printed in one ink cannot print a face in colour; the footnote says so.
Typography
- Literata (TypeTogether, Google Fonts variable: ital, opsz 7–72, wght 200–900), loaded as
Literata:ital,opsz,wght@0,7..72,200..900;1,7..72,200..900. - Display:
clamp(132px, 16.6667vw, 240px), 240 px at 1440; wght 200, opsz 72, line-height 0.88, letter-spacing −0.012 em, lining figures. One display element per page: the dateline, Free/Your/Mind, 77, the day numerals 3 4 5 6, $299, Austin. "2027" drops 0.11 em below its line so the tail of the y in "May" clears the 7; on the phone the dateline is three lines and "3–6," drops 0.15 em for the same reason. - Reading: 16 px / 1.45 at opsz 10; names and session titles wght 700 at opsz 12; the nameplate wght 700 at opsz 14; service rows (lunch, breaks, receptions) wght 300 italic in the quiet ink.
- The mind's hand: Literata italic, wght 400, opsz 9, 16 px, always in the margin column, each note opening with a caret. Line 02's resting prompt is set in the same hand in the quiet ink.
- Labels: 11.5 px uppercase, tracked 0.09 em, wght 500, opsz 8 for the flag, the page heads and the running head; the fork verbs and the composer's three suggestions in all-small-caps at 16 px (wght 800 and 500).
- Martian Mono (Evil Martians, wdth 75–112, wght 100–800), loaded as
Martian+Mono:wdth,wght@75..112,100..800: 11.5 px, wght 400, wdth 100, tracked 0.04 em, for the printer's apparatus only: folios, footnotes, the time column, source lines, the state line, the composer's line number. Nothing else on the page is mono. - Three sizes: 240 / 16 / 11.5. Mobile text inflation is switched off (
text-size-adjust: 100%) so the phone keeps the same three sizes.
Colour world
- Newsprint (text pages):
#E6E2D8under an inline SVG texture (fractal-noise grain plus a low, broad formation, ink-tinted, a few per cent). - Cover stock (the cover and the bound-in card leaf):
#F2EFE7under a finer, quieter grain. - Ink:
#17160F; quiet ink for folios, end times and service rows:#6F6B61; hairlines between rows:rgba(23,22,15,.32); page rules and the flag in full ink. - No accent colour at all. The only "second colour" is the paper changing under the cover and the card.
- Plates: pre-rendered one-ink halftones in
plates/(transparent PNG, the ink colour, alpha as coverage). Each is cropped to head and shoulders at 4:5, levelled on the face rather than the background (bright backgrounds held down), pre-sharpened, and screened with a 45° round-dot screen at one ruling for every plate: a 3 px pitch at display size, about a hundred dots across a 300 px plate, supersampled 3 × 3. No CSS filter and no blend mode, so the phone prints the same faces as the desktop; the plates decode synchronously, because an asynchronously decoded plate below the fold can be captured blank (the likely cause of the two empty boxes on the v1 phone). A dropped request retries three times and then leaves a screened empty plate, never a broken image. Ten plates weigh about 770 KB;plates/screen.pyis the pipeline that made them and reproduces them byte for byte. - Verso ghosts: the next display numeral only (77 on the leader, 6 on Wednesday), mirrored, at 3.2 % opacity, absolutely placed behind the page's own text and clipped to its page.
Layout grammar
- The page is the unit. Every section is a page: a head rule with the section name left and its particulars right, a main column (976 px at 1440) and a margin column (320 px) across a 48 px gutter, footnotes above the foot rule, the section name bottom-left and the folio bottom-right in mono. Pages are numbered 001–056; the day pages carry ranges (020–023, 024–030, 032–037, 038–039) and every session row carries its own folio, so the contributors' leader dots point at real pages.
- The cover grid: flag · ear · dateline | contents · Read + line 02 + standfirst | Write + the mind's note · footnotes + folio. It fills exactly 1440 × 900. The contents run as ruled rows down to the rule that Read and Write share, and each whole row is a link; "02 — yours, on the line below" is the label of line 02 itself.
- The running head (after the cover) is the way back and the way across: "↑ No. 14 · section" links to the contents on the cover; Mon 3 · Tue 4 · Wed 5 · Thu 6 are links to the four programme pages, the current day underlined; then the city and dates, Tickets ↗, the folio (a link to the top of the page in view) and line 02. Between 1101 and 1300 px the facts drop out; below 1100 px they stay out and line 02 shortens.
- Contributors: a 77 numeral, two plates, two more in the margin, then a three-column index with hairlines. Turnover lines hang by 1 em, the leader runs from the last word, and the folio sits on the last line; every folio is a link to the session row where that contributor appears, and the row is marked on arrival with a caret in the gutter and an underlined title. People are an index and numbered plates, never a grid of headshots.
- Programme: the day numeral in a 270 px column that keeps its place (sticky under the running head) while the day's sessions pass; the sessions as rows (time / title, people, kind / folio) with hairlines; service rows quiet.
- The subscription card is bound in: its whole leaf changes to cover stock edge to edge, perforated across its full width ("Bound in on cover stock · tear along the perforation"), the only full-bleed moment in the issue. On it, $299 at display size, four tiers as a form with boxes and leader dots, three ruled fields, "Post to eventbrite.com/e/ets27-tickets".
- Phone: one column; the flag is the nameplate and one line (No. 14 · ETS27 · Free Your Mind); the dateline stacks in three lines with the insertion under it; the ear follows the dateline and carries "tickets on sale ↗"; Read with line 02 and Write with the mind's note stay adjacent, and the contents follow them; the margin becomes a strip of italic notes under each page; footnotes run full width with the folio on its own line beneath, and dates never break; the index runs in one column; the running head shows "↑ section · May 3 · 4 · 5 · 6 · p."; line 02 is pinned to the foot of the screen once the cover has passed.
Motion and life
- The proofreader's lines draw once after the fonts load: an SVG overlay computes a path from each caret to its note (into the gutter when the note is in the same column, out to the right before rising when the note sits above; a note about a title starts from the end of the title's first line and rises before it crosses to the margin) and animates
stroke-dashoffsetover 0.9 s with a 0.18 s stagger. The cover's insertion line draws first, then the hand writes the city in over 1.2 s. - The caret at the start of line 02 blinks four times while the cover sets, then holds still, as an idle cursor does, until the line is focused. Nothing loops.
- The day numeral stays with its programme while the sessions pass under it.
- The running head slides in once the cover is passed, and its section, folio and current day follow the page in view.
- The composer's caret ticks for 650 ms while a page is composed; the composed rows settle with a single 70 ms stagger.
- No scroll choreography, no reveals, no cursor effects. Reduced motion gets the marks drawn, the city written and the caret still. The colophon says so: "Nothing on these pages moves after the marks are drawn, except the folio in the running head, the day numeral that keeps its place while its programme passes, and the caret on line 02, which blinks a while and then waits. Nothing loops."
The fork and the mind
- The fork is two verbs in two columns on the cover: "Read ↓" in the text column (the issue in order, with the folios where things are) and "Write ^" in the margin column, above the mind's first note. The standard route is the page read in order; the mind's route is the margin.
- The composer is line 02: a mono "02", the insertion caret, and an empty ruled line across the text column with a waiting caret and a prompt in the mind's hand ("write the next question here, and I will file it as a page — the mind"). Under the rule, right-aligned, the mind offers three questions "for instance" (who speaks tuesday · what does a pass cost · where is it), hairline-underlined; on the phone they stack one per line. No box, no pill, no button; Enter files the page.
- Line 02 follows the reader: it sits at the right end of the running head on every page after the cover (it widens when focused), and on the phone it is pinned to the foot of the screen. All three lines share one counter, so the next question is always 03, 04, and so on.
- One answer is already composed: p. 031, "01 · Who's speaking Tuesday", inserted after the Tuesday pages, listed in the contents in the mind's italic with a caret, with a 44-word say line, twenty-eight contributor rows in the page's own grid, two plates, a source footnote in mono and a ¶ note in the margin explaining where it was filed and why. Every folio in an answer is a link to the session row it was read from.
- Writing on line 02 inserts a numbered page after the page it concerns (the folio becomes that page's number plus a letter: 039a, 040a), adds a contents line on the cover, draws its marks, sets the running head's day when the answer belongs to one, and keeps older answers in place. The mockup's composer is a keyword mock over the baked snapshot (days, keynotes, who, tickets, place) and says honestly when it finds nothing.
- The omnipresent assistant on the standard route is the margin itself: every page carries a note in the mind's hand with a caret and a line into the text (stet on the leader, the count on the contributors, the day's shape on each programme page, the price after 19 November on the card, the pin on the place page). The last six questions are kept in localStorage for the return visit.
What to build next
- Wire the composer to the mechanics team's model and component catalogue; keep the page's rule that an answer is a numbered page with a say line, components in the page grid and a source footnote.
- Replay the saved questions on return so the visitor finds the issue they wrote last time.
- Hover or tap a contributor in the index to drop their plate into the margin.
- A same-document view transition that flies the flag into the running head as the cover scrolls away.
- A print stylesheet: this issue should print as an issue, with the folios in the corners.
- Session articles: each row becomes a page of its own with the speakers' plates and a margin.
- Screen the remaining photographed contributors with the same plate pipeline (crop, level on the face, one ruling) and place them across the programme pages.
- Accessibility: the marks are decorative and hidden from assistive tech; the three line-02 inputs are labelled; check the italic hand and the 11.5 px apparatus in the quiet ink against WCAG at the newsprint tone.
Risks
- The seed's own risk line: off-white, one serif, hairlines, done. The counters are built in (a real apparatus with footnotes and folios, an enormous dateline, no accent, two stocks with texture, show-through, halftone plates, marks drawn and written by hand) but the judgement is whether the eye reads an issue or an editorial template.
- Tell 4 (mono as the metadata voice): held to the printer's apparatus only; if the mono creeps into labels or navigation the page tips into the terminal look. The running head is set in the label face, not mono, for that reason.
- Tell 18 (photography made black and white as a premium filter): here it is one-ink printing with a footnote and one ruling across every plate; the plates must stay plates, never a grid.
- The running head now carries a lot (section, days, facts, tickets, folio, line 02); it is held to one 11.5 px line and sheds the facts first.
- Density and length: the issue is about 12,700 px tall at 1440; the facts and the price are on the cover and the ear so a visitor on hotel wifi never needs the rest, and the running head makes any day one click away.
- Show-through can read as a glitch to someone who has never held a newspaper; it is at about 3 % on two pages, behind text, and easy to remove.
- The paper texture is an SVG noise tile; at a few per cent it reads as paper, and any stronger it reads as dirt.
- Literata's lining figures carry the whole cover; the kerning of "3–6," at 240 px and the y-to-7 clearance are the things to check again in the production font build.
